How to Get a Dog to Stop Chewing
…with the Leash Correction Method.
Often dogs will chew when they are bored, but many times they chew for other reasons such as: nerves, anxiety, & hunger, to name a few.
Being a firm believer in “there is always a reason” type of philosophy, one can spend their time more wisely by simply acknowledging the reason and of course trying to arrange things differently to prevent the same undesirable behavior in the future; however, one should not use the “there is always a reason” mentality to lay excuses for NOT doing anything about the chewing and finding the answer to the one of the most popular questions around: How to Get a Puppy to Stop Chewing!
There are many ways to arrive at the same results, this is true especially in the world of dog training and the search of the answer to the question, how to get a dog to stop chewing?
We will discuss the “Leash Correction” method in this article. The idea of having your dog not chew on your personal belongings or property for the matter sounds great, doesn’t it?
Let’s first introduce the drawbacks on how to get a dog to stop chewing with the use of a leash and collar.
One major concern is the ability or desire to get to your dog that may be 10 yards away from you while chewing on your favorite shoes or maybe your wall; because that is what it will take to break your dogs’ chewing habit, that and a leash correction while your dog is still in the process of chewing. Oh, by the way, did I mention this should happened in less than a second and a half, or at the most (2) seconds or less in time.
The reason that the correction should take place in such a short window is becasue of the scientific evidence produced that tells us the dog makes a conncetion between an action and reward/correction best inside of that window, and probably wont make one outside of the window…IMPORTANT, if you cannot correct in that time span, please DON’T, your dog probably will not understand what she is being corrected for, it is not fair. Not too mention, unproductive.
So, if you are still reading, you are probably wondering, how to get a dog to stop chewing using the leash correction method, well, here goes:
- Place your dog on a leash ONLY when you can fully visually supervise them (you don’t want to leave them unattended where they can wrap themselves up and accidentally choke themselves)
- When they begin chewing on something that is they are not supposed to be chewing on, get to that leash and SNAP it (you should be thinking…SPEED, not power, you are just trying to interrupt the dog’s actions)
- That’s it, oh, the hard part, is when you need to do this when coming home from work, or just juggling a busy schedule.

Clicker Training Agility
The video below demonstrates how you can use clicker training with agility. Clicker training, or the atleast the concept has been around for a very long time.
Although, many pet trainers prefer to use a clicker, there are alot that use a word such as “yes” the click of the clicker or the usage of a certain word is to “mark” a correct behavior.
For example, the dog jumps over the bar, when he completes, (as soon as you can, the faster the better) you would, if using a clicker, CLICK! that marks the correct behavior but more importantly lets the dog know that there is a possible reward on the way.
So, when the dog hears the mark- CLICK they know they did that thing that gets them a reward.
